Choose a saddle type based on your use. Trail and pleasure for all-day comfort, ranch and roping for stability while working, reining for freedom of seat and precise aids, cutting for quick turns and a low center of gravity, barrel for a short skirt and confidence when turning. Modern frames tend to be fiberglass and keep the weight down; traditional wood with a cover has a classic feel - they tend to be heavier.
Pay attention to the chamber and clearance over the withers. In general, the saddle should be balanced and should not press on the horse's shoulder blade. The width of the chamber is usually described as Semi Quarter, Quarter and Full Quarter; wider variants sit on more robust, flatter backs.
Of course, the width of the spinal canal is also important. Choose the material according to the load and maintenance - full-grain leather for long life and a classic look, synthetics significantly reduce weight and are easy to clean.
Saddle and rider size: choose the saddle length in inches according to the rider's proportions and riding style. One inch (1" = 2.54 cm).
Have your saddle checked regularly by a saddler! Not only for the saddle itself, but also for the fit to your horse.
