How can massage and heat benefit horses?

Our horses work hard for us and a lot of pressure is put on their muscles.
Massage and heat are two simple ways we can help promote healthy muscle function in our horse.
Massage

Performance depends on freedom of movement, full flexibility and absence of musculoskeletal pain, all of which can be improved by massage (Gellman, 1998).
These factors also contribute to an overall relaxed and happy horse!

Benefits of massage include:

Soothes tired muscles.
Supports regeneration after training
It promotes relaxation.

Heat

Using heat is a great way to help sensitive horses that may find massage too much. Heat is non-invasive, gentle and well received with many associated benefits.
Research suggests that tissue temperature must increase by at least 3 to 5°C from resting temperature (Bockstahler et al, 2004). However, using something that is too hot can cause discomfort and even damage the tissue.

Increases flexibility.

We're getting started

A full battery charge can take up to 12 hours. When charging, the charger indicator lights up red. When the battery is fully charged, it will turn green.
Open the base of the Hotspot heating pad using the red tabs. Plug the connector into the battery and you're good to go!

Gloves will run approx. 10 x 10 minutes of warm-up and massage from a fully charged battery (based on high massage settings). To extend the life of the battery, disconnect it when not in use.

Select settings

To select the desired massage setting, press the appropriate button once for low, twice for medium and three times for high. The fourth press turns off the Hotspot heating pad.
You can turn the heating on/off with a simple push of a button.

LOW – best suited for a relaxing massage:

After riding (training)
On a day of rest.
For a sensitive horse.
When first introducing the glove

MEDIUM – best suited for routine maintenance and daily use:

For warming up before training.
General maintenance massage.

HIGH - best suited for:

For horses that prefer a more intensive massage.
For horses with goose and long hair
Horses that are slightly overweight.

If you keep the heating glove still, use a cyclic massage for your horse. This is useful when targeting a specific area.
If you are moving the heating glove over larger areas, use a continuous massage for your horse. This allows each stroke to provide the same massage.
Apply heat to your horse separately for a gentle session that promotes healthy circulation. This is ideal for sensitive horses or those returning to work. The heat is also perfect for warming up the muscles before stretching your horse.

Use heat and massage together for the perfect session! This works best when you keep the heating glove in one area or focus it on a smaller area.

Using the Heat function

Applying heat takes more energy from the battery than massage. When your battery no longer has enough power for heating, all the icons on the control panel will flash and go out. After that, you will be able to use the massage for a while. To use the heat again, fully charge the battery.
