Ultrasonic nebulizers are used to treat all respiratory diseases of various origins. The mist is generated using mechanical vibrations of 1.7 MHz (medical ultrasonic nebulizers) which are generated in distilled water. These vibrations are generated by piezoceramic components that convert electrical vibrations into mechanical ones. The aquapak® system is embedded in a contact fluid for physical separation between the medical nebulizer and the nebulizer unit. Mechanical vibrations penetrate the floor and propagate in the inhalation liquid.

They lead to the formation of capillary waves on the surface of the NaCl/drug solution, which flatten exponentially with increasing excitation frequency

Ultrasonic nebulizers reach a droplet size of 0.5 to 5 µm with an output of up to 6.5 ml/min. For horses of normal size, 4 ml/min is quite sufficient. They reach both the upper and lower respiratory tract. This distinguishes ultrasonic nebulizers from technically simpler compressor nebulizers, because the main functional part of the respiratory tract with its very large surface (bronchial system, alveolar system of the lungs) is fully reached.

More than 95% of the surface of the respiratory system is located below the larynx. The bronchial system has bronchioles the diameter of a human hair in its finest branches, and targeted application of nebulized agents must cross a threshold of less than 5/1000 mm (5 microns) to reach the alveolar structures. (air sacs in the lungs).
This means that most nebulized particles must be less than 5 microns in size.

Our ultrasonic nebulizers of the equosonic series (Private, Clinic) work with an oscillation frequency of the ceramic membrane of 1.7 MHz. This results in long-lived particles with a size of 0.5-5 µm (microns).
Due to the high ventilation rates in the delicate bronchioles, effective inhalation must take place calmly, i.e. with a low respiratory rate. The animal should not be moved beforehand and moving the animal immediately after treatment is not effective.

Open mask:

Our inhalation mask is in the form of a PE bucket made of high-quality, food-safe plastic, without additional valves. Out of conviction, we do not use a closed mask where the animal has to inhale the mist. Our mist is fed into the mask through a ventilation system. Have you ever had a lung function test? If so, you may know how uncomfortable it is to have to breathe against resistance. Imagine that for 10-20 minutes! Our belief is that when a horse is breathing without stress, it is breathing correctly. With stress-free and calm breathing, the air speed is lower and aerosols reach the mucous membranes better. The finest bronchioles of the lower respiratory tract represent the largest area to be nebulized. Our inhalers feed the inhalant into the mask. The horse can calmly exhale the mist and the treatment is more successful.

Inhalation while moving?

We do not recommend this! When we move, our breath becomes faster and shallower. This can result in the contents not being deposited sufficiently in the finest bronchioles. We recommend inhalation while standing. Movement after inhalation with a delay (15 minutes) is not a problem and can be beneficial. In principle, the horse must move, but not in direct combination with inhalation.
